Leprechaun - Marry, Sex, Kill: A Wickedly Fun Breakdown of the Warwick Davis Franchise

Quantum Recast Season 5

Could the "Leprechaun" movie franchise actually serve up a more twisted St. Patrick's Day than a pint of green beer? Brace yourselves for Cory and Nick's riotous romp through the cult classic series that's as unpredictable as the Irish weather.

This episode is all about playing "Marry, Sex, Kill" with the mischievously murderous Leprechaun films. Join us as we choose which installment to wed for eternity (The Best), which to indulge in for a single night (Guilty Pleasure), and which one deserves a swift end (The Worst). We even toss in a feisty debate over the Boondock Saints and ponder the endless trek of the Walking Dead series, with no sacred shamrocks left unturned.

Nostalgia abounds as we reminisce about Jennifer Aniston's pre-Friends brush with the Leprechaun, marveling at the film's evolution from a potential kids' movie to R-rated horror. We crack up over the series' zigzagging plots and on-the-spot myth-making, while giving a nod to actors who've come to embrace these quirky early roles in their glittering careers. From Vegas ventures and Martian princess escapades to the chaotic charm of "Leprechaun in the Hood," we've got enough laughs to fill a pot o' gold.

Finally, we wrap our chat with a lively discussion about the impact of horror genre shifts on our beloved Leprechaun and his slasher film brethren. Whether you've seen every film or just need a good chuckle, this episode is your four-leaf clover in the podcasting field. So, grab your greenest garb, pour yourself something strong, and prepare to be entertained!

Speaker 2:

1993. Welcome to another episode of Quantum Recast. This is the episode. I have dreamed about this episode ever since we started this dumb podcast. I have talked about, relentlessly about dumb movies, stupid movies, nick's made me watch dumb movies. Tanner made me watch dumb movies, ashes made me cat. They've all made me watch dumb movies. It's let's talk about real my turn.

Speaker 2:

Let's talk about some real cinema. This is Mary sex kill, where we play the famous I don't know camp game, I don't school bus, I feel like it's all over the place the internet, yeah it's just very sex kill. You give three options and in some cases we're just taking a whole franchise is in this case we have six options. Six options and we marry one which is the movie we think is the best correct. We sex one which is the guilty pleasure.

Speaker 1:

I guess you know.

Speaker 2:

Where we just think it's great but maybe it's not the best movie but it's great.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's a lot of fun. One night Stan movie yes, yes, you don't brag about it. But and then in certain circles, yes, and kill the worst one. But then that should not be, yeah.

Speaker 2:

Because again, this all comes from the theory that I have that all horror franchises have one movie. That just absolutely does not belong. Yes it's just. It makes no sense to the canon, it's dumb. So we're talking about leprechaun.

Speaker 1:

It is St.

Speaker 2:

Patrick's Day. We've gone through like five of them on this podcast that I've never gotten to talk about leprechaun, and we are here.

Speaker 1:

It's the St Patrick's Day, yeah, and we're, we're gonna. Instead of doing boondock saints or something like that, why would we do a?

Speaker 2:

dumb-ass thing like boondock saints.

Speaker 1:

Because we want to be like with the bro culture bro.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, this is a bro movie. It's it's want to be a Tarantino there was a time ten years ago where if anyone quoted or told me boondock Since their favorite movie, I immediately stopped talking. That person and that person's life went to hell in a hand basket. Every last one of them, you know. And so I that is. I don't like that movie. That's a dumb movie.

Speaker 1:

I need to rewatch it to give it a fair take. You know what hot?

Speaker 2:

take, I don't like Norman Reedus. I know that he's a one-note wonder man he had the time.

Speaker 1:

He had that call.

Speaker 2:

Oh what he's gonna play Daryl Dixon for another 20 years.

Speaker 1:

Nick like Keanu, he's like the. Frasier Crane of Television right now it's like oh he's still playing this character. There's there's the fact that they're still making spin-offs and non-spit, like they brought Andrew Lincoln back to do a Bacone and and Ranger Rick episode TV show. It's just, it won't go away.

Speaker 2:

I don't need. Are they still writing the the comic?

Speaker 1:

Or that, finally, there are games of thrones in it. Now Are they just rolling with it? It's a throne thing is the locking dead, a comic still After 16 years and a hundred and ninety three issues in 2019 Corey. It unexpectedly ended.

Speaker 2:

I'm shocked it went that long. I read like the first Gosh. I read a lot of the comic really and then they made the show watch the first episode didn't like it. I was that. I mean it was one of those. I'm not gonna get this a shock because it's not as good. Mmm and and then I watched. Y'all all had a watch party the night in.

Speaker 1:

Negan showed up.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, where the guy showed up and beats people to death with a bat.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

I like almost didn't talk to y'all for a week. I was like this is messed up.

Speaker 1:

Well, that was also one of the last episodes I watched. This is gross.

Speaker 2:

I'm done now back in my bedroom and was like get new friends.

Speaker 1:

So leprechaun.

Speaker 2:

So yeah, dude, so we're gonna play this game, okay, where we go through the leprechaun franchise and we are going to yeah, mary, sex killed the franchise. We may have the same answers. We have different answers, so most people that are clicked on this.

Speaker 1:

Probably clicked on it because they love leprechaun.

Speaker 2:

But for those, the uninitiated, or because they love friends, or sure they Jennifer Aniston's? Yeah, okay.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I get the logic there. But for the uninitiated Corey, what is leprechaun? The franchise?

Speaker 2:

Like a lot of horror franchises, but I will say this as a horror franchise, this one probably goes more all over the place than any other in terms of a hundred percent. Abandoned continuity after number two.

Speaker 1:

Like instead of like, jason, and the Friday the 13th, where they're slowly building the continuity and built shaping the monster.

Speaker 2:

You know, listen again. I think every horror franchise has non, cannot at least one non canonical thing. And we've done Friday, we've what we've done Friday 13th on this format before we have a sex killed Friday 13th and Jason goes to hell.

Speaker 1:

In my opinion is the only one can on our none, it makes no way. Yes, I think that's what we said. Yeah, it's the one where Jason's not really in the movie.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah, I mean besides the first one too.

Speaker 1:

No, I think I had a different one, but anyway, you know it's, it's, it's, it's.

Speaker 2:

There's always one that's hard to thread in right, yes you know there's at least one Freddy's dead, the final it's hard to thread in. You know the sex is changed on master for hard to thread in Leprechaun. You can't thread them together.

Speaker 1:

No no.

Speaker 2:

They make no sense. The first two, that's a movie in a direct sequel. Five and six is a movie in a direct sequel.

Speaker 1:

The other two are completely different ideas.

Speaker 2:

Completely out there. It's to the point. There's a fan theory Okay, it's the multiple Leprechaun theory. Okay, all the Leprechauns are different ones.

Speaker 1:

Interesting that, like I mean, he dies very clearly in each one, correct? Yes?

Speaker 2:

Now again, they believe that's what it is. They think that it's just like other than I guess you could say. The last two you could argue is the same Leprechaun because they are threaded together, but like there's a theory that the other four are like, it's a different Leprechaun each time.

Speaker 1:

Because he also changes up, because he goes from. He rhymes in the first two.

Speaker 2:

And at some point he abandons rhyming completely. He does take on different clothes. Sometimes his hair is really long, Sometimes it's short. Sometimes it looks a little different facially, which I mean at the same time, and all honestly, that's just because of wardrobe people and makeup and budgets and things like that. But we get to have fun fan theories. Just so a side note, there's technically eight Leprechaun movies. We are not including. Leprechaun Origins, which is the WWE per equal, I guess that's I mean just horrible.

Speaker 2:

I mean, they just went completely in the most random direction and then actually a very solid reboot In sci-fi made in 2018. Where I forget the name of the actor Leprechaun Returns.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, Leprechaun.

Speaker 2:

Returns. Lyndon Porco plays the Leprechaun, and he does so well. He really just turns on the Warwick Davis of it, all you know, and so it's really good. And actually Leprechaun Returns is supposed to be a direct sequel to the first one.

Speaker 1:

It's supposed to be a direct sequel to the Aniston, so we're getting into like Halloween territory, kind of it's like a legacy sequel.

Speaker 2:

And so it goes back to the house from the first one and all that stuff. I think, Ozzy makes a play by Mark Houlton. He's an Oklahoma boy, by the way.

Speaker 1:

Oh OK.

Speaker 2:

We claim Brad Pitt and Chuck Norris and Mark Houlton. The three the three it's the triad, so, but like it's supposed to be that. But we're not including those two because they're prequels and reboots. We just want the Warwick Davis six.

Speaker 1:

Got it OK.

Speaker 2:

So because Warwick Davis is to Leprechaun what Robert England is to Freddy Krueger, ok, that's fair.

Speaker 1:

That's fair.

Speaker 2:

Other people can play it, it's just never going to be the same. Ok, it's just not.

Speaker 1:

You know that. I mean, we talked about doing this episode and I was like Corey I have other than like. We were hanging out one night and both of the in the hood and back to the hood were on TV and we just watching it as we talked about other stuff. I had never sat down and watched these movies.

Speaker 2:

I was aware of them.

Speaker 1:

I was aware Jennifer Anderson was one of them, so I did, I did the task of watching the movies leading up in it.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I made you. I was like I can't do this right now.

Speaker 1:

By all means. It is a wild ride of movies. You can't have a more fun ride. Right, it's true, it's as crazy. And as the quality dips and rises, you know, warwick Davis stays consistent throughout, and maybe that's just it. The charm of Warwick Davis is really what keeps the glue together.

Speaker 2:

And it's the thing, robert. England took Freddie Krueger really seriously.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

And he doesn't hate the character. He hated putting on the makeup. He had that process but he loves the character. He gives that character all the props to his success. Warwick the leprechaun is the very same thing with Warwick Davis.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

He plays it as seriously as he possibly can yeah? Even when the leprechaun's in space.

Speaker 1:

Even when he's, even when he's hitting the bong.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, he plays it, he takes it so seriously and he adores the character and you have to appreciate that. Nick, do you have Give me some? Give me some just facts about?

Speaker 1:

this Some facts yeah.

Speaker 2:

Like who directed this?

Speaker 1:

Well, let me just give you the rundown, to start here, of all the movies that we are covering, so everybody's just clear as day. This is in for those of you that maybe you're just curious and you're listening to the episode. So you've got leprechaun one, just called leprechaun, released in 1993, directed by Mark Jones who wrote and directed it, yeah. And then you have leprechaun two in 94, by Robin Flender was the director. Leprechaun three, another year later, in 95. Brian Trenchard Smith directs this one and the subsequent one, leprechaun four, in space, in 97.

Speaker 2:

He got the good ones.

Speaker 1:

He took some time. And then you have leprechaun in the hood. We take a break until we get to 2000 with this one Rob Spira, I think I'm saying that name right and then leprechaun back to the hood in 2003 by Steve Aero, maloi Aero, maloi Aero, I will. I'm so sorry, but those are the ones that we're touching on. So the first three are back to back to back years, which happens in horror films like this, where there's low budget. We can turn it around real quick, and then they take their time a little bit, cori, and then they come up with some stuff, and that's about all I can say.

Speaker 2:

If you don't mind, I'm just going to take us through the franchise.

Speaker 1:

OK, ok, please do.

Speaker 2:

Leprechaun 1. All right, and this is the franchise. If New Line Cinema is the house that Freddie built, leprechaun is the house that Jennifer Aniston built. Because Leprechaun, depending on who you ask, was either a child's movie first that became a horror movie, or it's a horror movie that they lightened up, it feels more like the former than the latter. Different people say different things. I think the studio wanted a child's movie. Mark Jones said I want to make a horror movie, and so they were kind of looking at stuff like critters and stuff.

Speaker 2:

That's kind of family-friendly horror and it's silly and it's funny. So that's kind of what I think they try to go through. And then Warwick Davis really pushed hey, we can have a lot of fun with this, but they're all rated R. Leprechaun 1 feels really weird. You feel you notice the shifts constantly.

Speaker 1:

Oh yeah, the tone is back and forth.

Speaker 2:

It's never consistent, it's like one time you're like oh, this is kind of like hey, it's like a low-budget hocus pocus fun we're having, like it's scary but for kids.

Speaker 2:

And then like there's just blood and guts and you're just like, oh my gosh, okay, this took a shift. Jennifer Aniston's in the movie and that the movie was going to bomb Warwick Davis was kind of embarrassed by it at first, after they finished rapping. And then Friends happens. A year later Jennifer Aniston shows up on Friends and people rent the ever-loving shit out of this movie. It liked it so well in video rentals Because she was hot. It just made like $20 million in rentals and they're like make another one more.

Speaker 2:

And they're like maybe one of these actors will be in the next big sitcom.

Speaker 1:

Spoiler alert they were not.

Speaker 2:

They do not. Jennifer Aniston is by far the most famous person.

Speaker 1:

You know they should have just gone. Let's go get Star From Said show and put them in the leper car.

Speaker 2:

Well, at that point they don't. Those people don't need to be in the movie.

Speaker 1:

No, but you know, if you know what it is, you're like, hey, you have some fun.

Speaker 2:

So Jennifer Aniston for years refused to acknowledge this movie and Warwick Davis called her out. Oh, and so she actually like, contacted him and apologized and said I will start referring to this as my first big film success.

Speaker 1:

I mean sorry, I go to this you know movie.

Speaker 2:

She's like I was just embarrassed by it at first and it's like but then I'm sure she realizes that, like McConaughey, and Caprio and everybody started in some stupid horror movie, for sure. Oh, depp just owns his though.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Depp's just so excited Getting eaten by bed. I don't think. I think he's like perfect, yeah, that's great and so, but like so that's leprechaun. Leprechaun is essentially leprechaun comes over from Ireland because someone steals this gold. Yep, some people buy the house and it's essentially he's just trying to get his gold back, which is the plot of most of the movies. Yeah, be honest, someone takes his gold and he gets really upset.

Speaker 1:

Right.

Speaker 2:

And we just add lore as we go.

Speaker 1:

Right and the first one.

Speaker 2:

He's just allergic to four leaf clovers.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that's his thing.

Speaker 2:

And number two we take it to Los Angeles. That's right. I don't know, I don't remember how he ends up in Los Angeles. He's just living in a tree and he wants to impregnate a girl. That's his goal here. He wants a litter. He literally says litter of leprechauns.

Speaker 1:

Yes, and multiples leprechauns will be coming out of this woman.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, Because apparently leprechauns are birthed in litters.

Speaker 1:

Yes, traps are in a cave Like it's a, it's a tree he lives in a tree, Nick.

Speaker 2:

A very large tree, something Los Angeles doesn't even have. But he's in LA and finds the only tree. But someone steals his gold and he's upset, and so he has one Should be. Yeah, but he's also trying to impregnate some dude's girlfriend.

Speaker 1:

Not, not cool, not cool. Which is uncool, that's uncool. Now, the very missing is that she is, isn't she like in line with? Like one of his former slaves or something?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so he was like again, because it's mythology and you just see, this stuff's just made up. Every 2000 years he can get married. Okay, we don't explain why this is a rule for leprechauns at all, but it is. And so he needs a woman to sneeze three times on his 2000th birthday.

Speaker 1:

Right.

Speaker 2:

Without someone blessing her.

Speaker 1:

That's right Right.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and so he picks his slave's daughter, which is the only reference to him having a slave ever ever in the franchise. So we don't. We don't think slavery is cool. If you're thinking these.

Speaker 1:

This isn't a series, is an adracula situation, and so it's a yeah, it's a trackless situation, and so the movie this. I'm saying that the series doesn't continue it.

Speaker 2:

Oh, no, no, no and so like, but he's got like a little Wrenfield dude.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

And so he's about to be set free. Yeah, but the leprechauns uses his daughter as is bride right, and so he blesses her on the three. Yeah, blesses her on the third one. So the leprechaun get married for 2,000 more years. And so he finds, yeah, he's, he's, he's kind of bitter, like he's kind of playing the long game with the slave that he's killed. Yeah immediately it's like well, I'm gonna, I'm gonna bang your great, great, great great granddaughter.

Speaker 2:

He's just. He's just kind of holding a grudge still and so and again. If you've never seen these movies, just Google it. He's not a pretty man.

Speaker 1:

No, no, no, he's, he's, he's a, he's a cretion, a monster, yeah, he's gross-looking.

Speaker 2:

Honestly, I think he's one of the scariest things Hollywood's ever made like. I just think he's well Just that he's a small, small person.

Speaker 1:

On top of this and him walking around like that.

Speaker 2:

He's just terrifying yeah, like you know it's just, it's good, it's great makeup effects, all right. Leprechaun three we go to Las Vegas, which isn't that far not far Los Angeles. This is a good five-hour drive.

Speaker 1:

It's good yeah.

Speaker 2:

Um, now he's no longer. It's no longer four-leaf clovers, it's a necklace that turns him in the stone right Cuz he gets bought in a pawn shop. Yes, I don't remember how he ends up in the pawn shop, but he's a statue with a necklace on it. Someone takes the necklace off of them. Yep, it's a great opening scene because it's like a guy that's like all hobbled and crippled. You can tell he's been through the ring or he's like get ready this, the leprechauns after this dude up hard yeah but he's managed to get the necklace on him that turns him to stone.

Speaker 2:

Pawn shop guy takes the necklace off because he's a sleazy. Leprechaun three is in Vegas, pretty much out of its filmed in Las Vegas.

Speaker 1:

It's not any means no it's like an Atlantic City.

Speaker 2:

If you look at the casinos, it's like plastic tables that they just have roll at things.

Speaker 1:

Did they do any shots?

Speaker 2:

I maybe some wide shots or some stuff. So this is the Jason takes Manhattan.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, but I do think Jason takes man they filmed at least one one thing, and I'm square, and the rest is like in Toronto. Okay, yeah, right, so this is that case. Got it yeah.

Speaker 2:

I don't even know that they do anything in Vegas, Okay all right, there might be one now, if you thought that was crazy. Leprechaun four we're going to space space. Oh, I'm sorry, leprechaun three we I can't. I can't go on without saying that this one has a werewolf component.

Speaker 1:

You does he?

Speaker 2:

bites a man who starts turning into a leprechaun and he starts rhyming and getting hairy. There's like, which shows that there's multiple ways become a leprechaun or to create leprechauns, yeah he don't know why he's going out biting people in the second one, but again could be a completely separate leprechaun because he doesn't do that again.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Different rules. This one just has a viral component to it.

Speaker 1:

So space.

Speaker 2:

Cory space. Wow, this one opens up with a weird Star Wars ripoff kind of a battle scene with lasers and lightsabers. Not sure how they got lightsabers without getting sued. Eight ways from Sunday other than Warwick and Georgia tight.

Speaker 1:

That's true. Maybe he got permission. Yeah, you might hate. All you had to do is write a letter, lucas.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I'm your boy. I'm your original Ewok. Can I use lightsabers, oh?

Speaker 1:

sure, I guess that's okay, I guess I show, alright, yeah.

Speaker 2:

I hope that was a conversation I really do.

Speaker 1:

It was Lucas doing in 96 besides starting to write this atrocious reediting the, the original movies. Oh, that's right.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, okay, so this one, he wants to marry the Prince of Mars.

Speaker 1:

So he's still horny, he still wants to find a woman. Yeah, yeah probably 2000 years have passed, maybe he.

Speaker 2:

Again, this could be a different leprechaun.

Speaker 1:

It's definitely future, it's future, it's like they just alien. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's no. No, it hasn't been 5000 years, because it's only 2096 Korea, but it's future, that's the future.

Speaker 2:

It's the future either way he can run space. We don't know how long Martians live, so she could live another, that's true, a thousand years, and be fine right. So, but yeah, he's just trying to get with the princess of Mars. He's kidnapped her and this one's a wild ride.

Speaker 1:

So it's there's a lot going on, there's a lot of space politics going on, it just gets lost.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, on a spaceship the Typical space marines, because all future space movies have marines for some reason.

Speaker 1:

That's right, and they're still. They're still presented as meatheads. A hundred Yep.

Speaker 2:

They get a lot, they they get loose and, it's weirdly, jason X copies this movie a lot. What a great idea you know who's going to leprechaun Jason?

Speaker 1:

and so we can get a bigger budget.

Speaker 2:

Get him a mask. It'll be cool, because try mark is still making these movies and they're still a small studio, and so that's pretty much that one and he definitively dies.

Speaker 1:

In the. Oh yeah, I just definitively he gets explodes spoilers, he gets sucked into space, yeah.

Speaker 2:

So you're probably wondering how he ends up in South Central Los Angeles. Again, this is where either that's just the future leprechaun and that's just how he ultimately dies, because it's in 20. I think the timeline is just in the five, five and six happened before. Yeah, yeah, yeah, because he gets ingrained in South Central's Hip-hop culture yes and gets really addicted to weed.

Speaker 1:

He does, which is fair, you know. I mean, he's a leprechaun, ireland it's. It's all connected.

Speaker 2:

That's the fifth and sixth movie.

Speaker 1:

That's it when it's, it's, it's awesome Ice tea's there ice tea is a pimp that runs into him, like in the 70s. And then they, and then he, yeah, the necklace gets put back on so that's carried over, and then, yeah, the, the, the first, the other, first, in the hood is he's attacking, like this guy who wants to be a rapper, yeah, and then because now he owns a flute. Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I see stole his flute right right that writes hit songs.

Speaker 1:

Or hypnotizes people.

Speaker 2:

Put the flute in the song, people immediately listen.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, yeah that's right.

Speaker 2:

So they steal ice tea's.

Speaker 1:

Got it first, yeah and then, and then it's a career.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, he becomes like, he becomes a producer, basically, and then these other people steal and leprechaun just wants a stupid flute back.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and there's gold, there's gold, there's always gold, there's always gold, yeah, 100% wait, was there gold in the fourth one? Yes, in space, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm sure, I'm sure there's gold in space.

Speaker 2:

He stops rhyming in space, yeah, but then when we get back to South Central or the hip-hop world, he has to rhyme some. Yeah, it doesn't rhyme the whole time.

Speaker 1:

He does have a rap. Does have a rap at the end.

Speaker 2:

Incredible, if you have. If you have never seen these, I hope we just told you to go watch all the leprechaun.

Speaker 1:

They're. They are sitting there listening in their cars at home or ever, and they're just like what is this series?

Speaker 2:

Well, you should check it out. Orwick Davis is the leprechaun through all of the six. He's great, he's committed to it. You don't really get any more famous people besides Jennifer Aniston.

Speaker 1:

And then iced tea at some point, those are the main people and so that's the franchise. Yep in a nutshell.

Speaker 2:

And you can try to thread them together, but I've seen all these movies a million times and I've never found a great way.

Speaker 1:

So, Corey, just to personalize it a bit, how did you come across these movies?

Speaker 2:

Oh, because I wasn't dude. We had different childhoods.

Speaker 1:

Well, I know we did but was there a particular memory that's tied to it? Was it just something that came on?

Speaker 2:

No, I was just like an eight-year-old when video rentals was king. Like it's just. That's what you did.

Speaker 1:

You had no limits.

Speaker 2:

Like every grocery again. Okay, so I grew up in a town without a blockbuster.

Speaker 1:

We didn't have a blockbuster until I was like in high school.

Speaker 2:

You know, we were in DVD world before we got a blockbuster. You've heard about them existing. Sometimes you would drive by one in Sherman, but you can't rent there because you don't go to Sherman every day.

Speaker 1:

And it's a one-day rental. Yeah, it's a 30-minute drive, yeah, so.

Speaker 2:

I couldn't drive, my mom wouldn't let me rent anything, and so that's rough. I was in a town where there was one movie rental place and then there was a lot of businesses that did video rentals as a side hustle.

Speaker 1:

There was a grocery store in my hometown that had a rental space. Our grocery store had one.

Speaker 2:

That's where my mom dropped me off when she went to go get groceries. Like you just look at movies. There was one. There was like two tanning salons.

Speaker 1:

Oh, yes, that also rented movies.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, there's an yeah so my mom and sister go tan. They just leave me out there and I just again my grandmother. My grandmother used to put horror movie tapes in that my older cousins rented when she was babysitting me and I just had an affinity for them. I thought they were fun.

Speaker 1:

I'm sure there are many a child that envy you Cory of the 90s.

Speaker 2:

But hey, you had to be tough. You couldn't be afraid of them, that's true. So, and I'll say this if you're saying this and you don't like horror movies and stuff, my wife despises horror movies and she thinks these movies are great. That's. That's hybrids. I've made her watch all these and she's like they're watchable. She's like they're not really scary, so they're not that's that's kind of the thing.

Speaker 1:

There are like murders and like stuff. Then Gore happens to it, but it's not on the level of like Jason or Freddie, like no, by the time you get to the third one, it's just ridiculous.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it's like prostitutes coming out of TVs and like robo prostitutes?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's it's wild.

Speaker 2:

It just goes off the deep end and so, but in a really, really fun way, because the movies are never to. It's great when the movies are not taking them so seriously. But Warwick Davis is.

Speaker 1:

Yes.

Speaker 2:

And so, yeah, so that's my history with it is just like you would go into. I still don't know. I still remember the cover of the leprechaun one. It's just him peeking through a door yeah T-shirt and it was just kind of off putting and me and my cousins rented it and then you know, every year they're making one and so you just go. Number two is out. When the first time I saw in space was in Wimpy's, which was a video pizza sub place in Sanger Texas, I was doing my cousins and we thought that was the coolest thing ever.

Speaker 2:

It's like the poster is just the leprechaun looking at the moon and I mean it does not take place on the moon at all. But he's looking at the Apollo 13s or like Apollo, whatever stuff that got left there, not 13, 13 went bad, but and so I that's. It was amazing like that. I just it's just that thing when you're a kid you know things, because it was on the box, Right.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, you just looked at the cover I went this looks incredible.

Speaker 2:

Like I never watched the thing as a kid because it looked like a scuba diver on the cover and I was like I don't like see stuff, and then you find out, there's no naked women on this, yeah. When there's not, it's all dudes. Yeah, and so leprechaun, and it fought. Leprechaun follows a lot of the slasher stuff Other than teenagers, but you're going to see boobs and there's going to be.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and most of the people that die are hateable. True, it follows most of the tropes, the tropes.

Speaker 2:

And you just have Warwick Davis having a great time.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, what more can you ask for, corey?

Speaker 2:

Leprechaun versus Chucky. I don't know how we need to make that happen. That's true. It needs to happen.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1:

Apparently there was a candy man leprechaun pitch and I'm sure that got shut down very quickly.

Speaker 2:

I don't even know how that script looks. I, how do you do it? How do you have this like weird, like urban African American mythological thing run into this Irish gold loving Well, it becomes the last cracking dude, it becomes the Las Vegas, or apparently Los Angeles, because that's where the leprechauns hiding now. Like candy man is the modern Dracula. It's this gothic horror figure. And it's like what? I guess that we had Dracula versus Abbot and Castello and stuff.

Speaker 1:

We've gone there, we've gone that route, that's true.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, make it work. It's still on the table, but yeah, but ideally we want it to be really matched at a three foot versus three foot scale here.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, for sure it makes it more fun.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, come on, chuckie's like still a thing. Yeah, yeah, we can bring leprechaun back, come on.

Speaker 1:

Okay, corey, is it time? It's time, let's do this. So do we want to go? What's the order? We go. Well do we want to do kill sex, because it's always Mary, sex kill, yeah.

Speaker 2:

But we kind of do. I think I always like sex, kill Mary.

Speaker 1:

Okay, we want to get the one we like out of the way.

Speaker 2:

then the one that we shouldn't like and then the one that we really like. The proper order is guilty pleasure. The one we hate and the one we like swear by.

Speaker 1:

Listen the game. People change the game up because it's always like well, I'm definitely going to kill that thing.

Speaker 2:

Well, also Mary, sex kills. A game you play when you're a kid on the school bus and you just say three names. You don't go into detail.

Speaker 1:

That's true. We're going to go into detail. Yeah, so Cardinal sin here.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so Elaborate. No, I'm not elaborating on that, anyways. So do you want to go first, or should I go first? You go?

Speaker 1:

first, it's your franchise. I have some hot takes Okay.

Speaker 2:

My, my, my sex, my guilty pleasure. Okay Is leprechaun in space.

Speaker 1:

Okay.

Speaker 2:

It's a good time.

Speaker 1:

It's fun, it's wild.

Speaker 2:

It's a fun wild ride, and at this point I think Warwick Davis has like abandoned that. These movies are good or you know he's just thankful we're still making them and that people are renting them you know, and it's, he's just having fun. I do like that he's not necessarily rhyming in this one.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

And it's just weird. It's like it's got the space brain thing, but it also has this like cyborg guy.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, oh, that's. That's also why, yeah, the scientist that's trying, he's like he's a cyborg and he's trying to like they figure out that the princess has like regenerative, regenerative abilities, and so he's like he's taken her blood and he's like I'm going to use this to build my body back, because he's essentially Robocop.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, he's just a head on top of a moving robot thing.

Speaker 1:

And then the leprechaun and him have like a meeting of the minds and leprechaun decides to throw in like spiders and stuff into the mix and make him drink it, or takes shoots, shoots, injects him in the head with it, and then he turns into like a terrifying freakish creature out of a Cronenberg movie.

Speaker 2:

And Nick, this is a true story in 2000,. Whatever, it was three maybe, I went and saw Pirates of the Caribbean in theaters.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

And you have Jack Sparrow's awesome entrance where he's on a sinking boat, lands on the dock and the guy that asked for money that's the cyborg. That's the cyborg, and I was in theaters and he goes. That's the guy from Leprechaun 4. That's amazing. And whoever was with me was like what are you talking?

Speaker 1:

about? They're like what is Leprechaun 4?

Speaker 2:

I've probably never talked to that person again.

Speaker 1:

I was like all right, we're done, You're not cool anymore. Probably my girlfriend was like we're done here, Can't keep up with you anymore.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so yeah, that's him.

Speaker 1:

Okay, that's fair, it's fair. Hey, it's fair, I get it, I get why I recognize him immediately. Get the why for sure.

Speaker 2:

And also he's very like thespian stage and is acting in this one.

Speaker 1:

It's very weird. You're like how did you end up in this movie?

Speaker 2:

I feel like you, just came out of Royal Albert Hall and somehow signed on to Leprechaun 4 in space it does not fit, but it's so great because it doesn't. Yeah, because he's out acting everyone Except for maybe Warwick. Let's get Warwick's props.

Speaker 1:

So space would have been my pick, corey, but I really like Leprechaun 3. I like Vegas. It's so unhinged in all the other ways I've got to ask why it just it makes sense to agree because you're like, yeah, gold Vegas, it ties together. But then just the absurdity of it all, like yeah, the girl coming out of the TV to kill the guy, the weird turning into like this robot thing, and then and I think that sealed the deal when he just did the, he meets Elvis or an Elvis impersonator and they just do a little dance together.

Speaker 1:

And I was just like this is incredible. This should not exist and it does. It does, yeah, the whole werewolf thing, and like they lean into the whole, like it's the most absurd stuff and he's rhyming the whole time.

Speaker 2:

And that guy, the guy that plays, the guy bitten by the not that he ever went on to much that I think you know fame he commits hard.

Speaker 1:

He does commit super hard Now.

Speaker 2:

John Gattons has aged well, so he's brought him up on. Well, he's in real steel, real steel too, real steel Aladdin, or he's going to be in Aladdin too.

Speaker 1:

But yeah, I just think the Vegas thing, even though it wasn't made in Vegas, which is disappointing, but it's a horror slasher franchise, so I understand Maybe a remake in Vegas now would be great, but it just does it. Just it hit the right notes for me and I just enjoyed it. Like space was great too, no lie there, but like Leprechaun 3, it was good, it was a good time. I wish it was just Leprechaun in Vegas or something.

Speaker 2:

For the record, leprechaun 3 was filmed in 14 days, in 14 days.

Speaker 1:

You have any idea how hard it would be to film a movie. I filmed the movie in 14 days, Corey. It's hard.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I mean, it's also the start of the directive video where they're just like, okay, no one's going to the theater to see these, but they're renting the hell out of them.

Speaker 1:

Corey, if Alamo Draft House or somebody does a showing of Leprechaun, are you gonna go show them? Oh, let's go, okay, yeah, yeah, good to know, good to know.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, they were doing really good. Okay, one shot was in Las Vegas. The scenes of the Leprechaun walking around.

Speaker 1:

Okay, just the strip. You had to have the shot and they did it without permits.

Speaker 2:

They were gorilla films. I love that so much they're like getting them out of the car and makeup like all right, all right, all right, shoot, shoot, shoot, go, go, go, go go.

Speaker 1:

And so that is awesome, awesome, impressive when you think about it.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, not for sure. Okay, so I like that our sexes were they're different, different choices. Yeah, well, that it was three and four. First of all, yeah, we do.

Speaker 1:

I guess the middle of the pack here.

Speaker 2:

Oh my goodness, this is amazing, are we going?

Speaker 1:

to kill now.

Speaker 2:

We're killing the one. Yeah, let's talk about the one. That just does not belong.

Speaker 1:

Which one is in your mind? The one you killed, cory?

Speaker 2:

Nick, I have to tell you this, but it's Vegas. No, no, I'm just saying Vegas In terms of, if you have to thread them together, I can somehow make space work more than I can the werewolf thing work, because it never comes back up.

Speaker 1:

Like the space thing. It's the jumping the shark, but they jump it so hard that it works. But like oh, they commit hard to it. But I still feel like Vegas was like, at least it was in the realm. We were like yeah, we don't, there's no rules to this. Like demonic leprechaun thing, it could turn him into one.

Speaker 2:

I mean, I think the leprechaun bites people in other movies, yeah, but it's a different leprechaun. There's never any. Okay, I mean, that's the thing If we're going to leprechaun. There's a multiple theory here. Yeah yeah, yeah, I weird. It really comes down to either the last one back to the hood or three for me.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, but.

Speaker 2:

I just go with three. Three is hard to make work for me in terms of the canon of it.

Speaker 1:

That's fair, that's fair, I know.

Speaker 2:

But again, like 10 year old, corey loved three.

Speaker 1:

Again saw that the box in.

Speaker 2:

Wimpy's as well and like hey, he's in Vegas.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

And so because those movies were being made for essentially kids' mind that are just like. Oh, the leprechaun's here now.

Speaker 1:

So Corey, I have to kill the first in the hood. Oh wow, it just didn't strike a nerve with me. The second one, I felt like, really the second one, I felt like they were. It was almost like they were like okay, we're gonna actually try to make this a slasher movie and kind of try to follow that theme and that storyline. The rapping doesn't save it for me, corey. Like the rest of the movie was just very all over the place for me, like it was just you don't like lep in the hood, it's just.

Speaker 1:

It was like somebody read, Saw Hustle and Flow before it came out and was like what if we just put a leprechaun in it? And it made him kill everybody.

Speaker 2:

That's probably what they did. They just watched Apollo 13 and said let's take him to space.

Speaker 1:

Hustle and Flow comes out later, but it's, that's literally. I'm always like this is just Hustle and Flow, but instead everyone dies.

Speaker 2:

So we're saying that Hustle and Flow ripped off leprechaun in the hood probably Absolutely. So, Okay. You know it's wild, as that was like my very close second sex.

Speaker 1:

Of your sex. Yeah, Honestly, I can get that, but it just. I really liked it in the hood. It didn't work.

Speaker 2:

The second in the hood back to the hood worked for me, but to be clear, it's back to Duhood, let's not, yeah, it's the in the first one and they go the like T-H-A. Yeah, yeah, the hood.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, but yeah it just it didn't work for me. The second one was more weirdly consistent. That's a hard thing to say about these movies, but like it did its best to try and be a slacker.

Speaker 2:

I will say that I think the leprechaun looks coolest in the two in the hood movies.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that's fair. The hair anywhere is like black and it's like green. It is very more like evil looking. Yeah, I would agree with that for sure.

Speaker 2:

All right, man. That's weird. I think we have two different tastes in leprechaun movies.

Speaker 1:

Yeah we got different things out of it.

Speaker 2:

It's a lovely little thing I like space and I like.

Speaker 1:

But yeah, Vegas was just it just struck the right chords for me. So clearly we've set up some things. So what is your merry Corey?

Speaker 2:

All right, it's my good controversial.

Speaker 1:

Okay, I'm ready.

Speaker 2:

I'm merry number two, not the original.

Speaker 1:

I also merry number two, number two is great right. I think that's the thing. It's kind of like the Friday the 13th series where the first one has its iconic status for different reasons. But I felt like the first one they didn't know what it was, they didn't know what they were doing, and then by the time the second one was made, they're like okay we know the rules, we know the frameworks here.

Speaker 1:

now we know exactly who we're catering to. Let's go, and so I think that's why it's so good. It has the weird hole, like him trying to get the girl pregnant thing, but it's still. Yeah, it's tonally, structurally it's the most consistent, but it's also, I think, the best one.

Speaker 2:

Oh, I absolutely think it's honestly the most like. I think, just like down the line slasher. Yeah, exactly Because the first one doesn't know what it is. The first one is a very close second and I probably watched the first one more than any of them.

Speaker 1:

Honestly, though, other than Jennifer Aniston's presence, the first one was it wouldn't have been towards the top for me. To be honest, I like the first one a lot for what it is and I like Mark Holtz and a lot.

Speaker 2:

He's a great character actor. He plays Aussie. They have like this weird of myson men thing going with him and the kid Right. Yeah, he's the grown simple man and the really smart kid.

Speaker 1:

The kid movie ideas were still there, yeah.

Speaker 2:

And so I like it. It just doesn't know what it wants to be, and so when you get the second one, it's like it knows what it is. It's just a straightforward slasher movie, but then by the time we get to three, it's just the rails are off it is we have just abandoned ship Like it is completely and it never really regrowns itself. Like you said back to the hoods the closest it got to, trying to go back to like maybe just a slasher movie.

Speaker 1:

Well, we got into 2003 and I think that was you could see. The mindset was like maybe we should try to take it a little seriously.

Speaker 2:

That and like in 2003, though like even if that movie had done well, leprechaun was not going to survive. Essentially, the Texas Chainsaw Re-master remake happening in 2003, that changed horror. That said, we now go hard in the paint. Right yeah, gritty and hard. None of the original slasher survived it? No, they did not, and even the reboots post 2003 are like they tried to be hard and we're like this isn't fun. This is horrible. Why is Freddy Krueger molesting children?

Speaker 1:

Or why is.

Speaker 2:

Jason Bore, he's so I don't know almost racist. It's horrible, but yeah, okay, at least we came together on the number two.

Speaker 1:

We agreed on two. I'm glad that you like number two.

Speaker 2:

I thought it was gonna be a hot take when I didn't do number one.

Speaker 1:

I don't think when number one is as good Like I think there's quality moments to it. But I think, two is the most consistent. Personal favorites are three and four for sure easily.

Speaker 2:

Cause they're just a good time. And I know that we probably did a bad job selling these movies, Cause they oh. I'm sure people are gonna go watch them. Right now you better people. It's great there's anything. They're going to be a marathon somewhere probably sci-fi you know, or either multiple TV channels have rights to them and just find them.

Speaker 1:

They're somewhere and just watch these and they're also all like on a mixture of peacock and hulu right now.

Speaker 2:

So Well, yeah, cause it's like it's owned by four different companies, you know, just make sure you have yeah, Do do hulu.

Speaker 1:

If you got hulu, watch it then just make the jump to peacock or rent it for whatever $3 that it is for the month.

Speaker 2:

So hey, supposedly they're working on a reboot again. So maybe I don't know if Warwick's gonna be our boy, they may may abandon Warwick.

Speaker 1:

Hold this word now. Yeah, he's gotta be. I mean, he was a child in return of the Jedi.

Speaker 2:

And you know what's wild about Warwick Davis Is that like George Lucas. How old is he? 54. 54. I can still do it. Yeah, he's fine, he's got it. He's still got it. It's Warwick Davis, but he, you know that George Lucas gets a special thanks in the first movie of the credits because Warwick Davis was under contract with him and he had to go on loan.

Speaker 1:

Oh, interesting. I thought that I was aware that that was still in the 90s where people are like still owned, it's like. Lucas, you still own actors. It's like in, you start to go on loan.

Speaker 2:

It's like so, but I mean, hey, at least Lucas was cool and be like yeah, sure, I'm not making any more.

Speaker 1:

He wants stuff for a while, not for a couple of years, here. Ok, well, I guess that's it. But yeah, corey, this was a. This was a wild adventure to go on and I enjoyed myself. So just so you know, yeah, I will. If a leprechaun movie is on TV or something, I will stop and watch.

Speaker 2:

They are stop and watch movies.

Speaker 1:

They are, they are.

Speaker 2:

It's just, it's easy to do it. Honestly, that happened to me not long ago. I think that happened to me last March. I was staying out at my parents' house babysitting their dogs and it was like sci-fi was running them all.

Speaker 1:

And I was just like all right, I'm just going to sit down.

Speaker 2:

I watched like two through four, like it's just like I stayed up.

Speaker 1:

I was just like these are great.

Speaker 2:

Please watch them people. They're great. I own them. I have the box set. I will let you borrow them.

Speaker 1:

Speaker 1:
